Bastion – Baluarte de San Francisco

Explore the rich history and architectural beauty of the Bastion of San Francisco, a 17th-century fortification that once defended the city against pirates and invaders. The Baluarte de San Francisco is the largest bastion in Campeche’s once-formidable defensive wall.

Campeche, like many other affluent colonial Caribbean cities, was a prime target for pirates. In order to defend itself the decision was taken, in 1686, to build colossal walls offering protection to the people and merchants who lived in the 80 hectares they enclosed.

An irregular, eight-sided polygon was built over the next 18 years, with a robust bastion, at each corner.

Discovering the Fascinating Bastion of San Francisco

The Bastion of San Francisco is a stunning example of the colonial fortifications that were built throughout Mexico in the 17th century. This historic site is a must-visit for anyone interested in architecture, history, and military engineering.

The Bastion of San Francisco was built between 1686 and 1704 as part of the city’s defensive system against pirates and other invaders.

The fortification was strategically located at the southern end of the city’s walls, overlooking the sea and the San Francisco neighborhood. It was one of four bastions built to protect the city, the other three being the San Carlos, San Jose, and Santa Rosa bastions.

The Bastion of San Francisco is a massive structure that consists of two levels.

The lower level includes a series of tunnels and rooms that were used for storage, as well as a cistern that provided the fortification with fresh water. The upper level was the main defensive platform, featuring cannons that were used to repel attacks from the sea.

One of the most impressive features of the Bastion of San Francisco is its pentagonal shape, which was designed to allow for a wider range of fire. The fortification was built using local stone and coral, and the walls are up to six meters thick in some places.

Today, the Bastion of San Francisco is open to visitors and offers a fascinating glimpse into Mexico’s colonial past. The fortification has been beautifully restored and features exhibits on the history of the city, as well as displays of period weapons and military equipment.

Visitors can explore the tunnels and rooms of the lower level and climb to the upper level to take in the stunning views of the sea and the city.

The Bastion of San Francisco is also a popular spot for photographers and sightseers. The fortification’s unique shape and beautiful stonework make it a stunning subject for photos, and the panoramic views from the upper level are simply breathtaking.

The Bastion of San Francisco is a fascinating and beautiful historical site that is well worth a visit for anyone traveling to Campeche City. With its rich history, impressive architecture, and stunning views, it is truly a gem of Mexico’s colonial past.
