Take a break from sightseeing and while away the afternoon on the closest beach to Campeche, where gentle surf and plenty of facilities make for a great experience.

Its name means “Pretty Beach,” and Bonita Beach certainly lives up to its title. Warm, gentle waters lap against the sand and a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere prevails.

Don’t expect to have the beach completely to yourself, however, as its proximity to the downtown area means it is a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike. Come on a weekday afternoon for a relatively peaceful experience, or enjoy the upbeat vibe at the weekend, when the beach comes alive with a jovial summer buzz.

Bonita Beach is located about 8 miles (13 kilometers) from downtown Campeche, just past the village of Lerma, making it the closest beach to the city. Enclosed within a gated resort, the beach has plenty of facilities, making it a firm favorite with families.

Rent a “palapa,” a beach shelter made from palm fronds to keep out of the blistering midday sun and swing lazily in a hammock.

When you’re ready for some exercise, you will find plenty to keep you amused. Take a dip in the warm waters of the Caribbean in one of the designated swimming areas or join locals for a fun and fast-moving game of football or volleyball on the marked pitches.

In the evening, enjoy a relaxed meal at the on-site restaurant, which serves up a good selection of light meals and fresh fish and seafood. Or, take a respite from the afternoon sun to cool down with a well-deserved ice cream or an ice-cold drink in the shade here.

Bonita Beach is located about 20 minutes drive from downtown Campeche and is easily accessible by public transportation. Ask a taxi to drop you off at the entrance to the beach, or hop in one of the “combis”(collective minibusses) which trundle that way regularly.

The beach is free for pedestrians to enter, though there is a charge per car to enter the parking lot.

There is a small charge for the palapas.
