Take a break from sightseeing and while away the afternoon on the closest beach to Campeche, where gentle surf and plenty of facilities make for a great experience.
Its name means “Pretty Beach,” and Bonita Beach certainly lives up to its title. Warm, gentle waters lap against the sand and a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere prevails. Don’t expect to have the beach completely to yourself, however, as its proximity to the downtown area means it is a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike. Come on a weekday afternoon for a relatively peaceful experience, or enjoy the upbeat vibe at the weekend, when the beach comes alive with a jovial summer buzz.
Bonita Beach is located about 8 miles (13 kilometers) from downtown Campeche, just past the village of Lerma, making it the closest beach to the city. Enclosed within a gated resort, the beach has plenty of facilities, making it a firm favorite with families. Rent a “palapa,” a beach shelter made from palm fronds to keep out of the blistering midday sun and swing lazily in a hammock.
When you’re ready for some exercise, you will find plenty to keep you amused. Take a dip in the warm waters of the Caribbean in one of the designated swimming areas or join locals for a fun and fast-moving game of football or volleyball on the marked pitches.
In the evening, enjoy a relaxed meal at the on-site restaurant, which serves up a good selection of light meals and fresh fish and seafood. Or, take respite from the afternoon sun to cool down with a well-deserved ice cream or an ice-cold drink in the shade here.
Bonita Beach is located about 20 minutes’ drive from downtown Campeche and is easily accessible by public transportation. Ask a taxi to drop you off at the entrance to the beach, or alternatively hop in one of the “combis”(collective minibuses) which trundle that way on a regular basis. The beach is free for pedestrians to enter, though there is a charge per car to enter the parking lot. There is a small charge for the palapas.
